NHS Direct comments on the organisation’s future

Nick Chapman, Chief Executive of NHS Direct, said:
“Contrary to what was implied last week it was never decided to close NHS Direct, and that remains the position. NHS Direct is an organisation that the public know and trust and we expect to play an important part in carrying forward the Government's plan to nationally rollout an improved service under the new non-emergency 111 number.”
The Government has announced plans to eventually phase out the NHS Direct telephone number 0845 4647.
