NHS Direct’s health and symptom checkers can provide self-care advice so you can treat your symptoms yourself or, if necessary, direct you to another health service for a further assessment.

The online symptom checkers have been developed using the same procedures used by the telephone advisors, so people will get the same advice whether they use the phone or the web.

People who would prefer to speak to someone, who don’t have internet access or think a further discussion about their symptoms is needed, can still call NHS Direct on 0845 4647. Our telephone lines are open 24-hours a day, every day.

At busy times people with less urgent symptoms may have to wait for a call-back from a health advisor.
