Pharmacist advisor profile - Jane Whitehouse

I am a pharmacist advisor at NHS Direct. I have been a pharmacist for 11 years and during that time have worked in hospitals and the community. I have previously specialised in treatments for cancer and infectious diseases.

The main priority of the pharmacist advisors at NHS Direct is to provide support for calls about medicines, particularly for patients who are vulnerable to the effects of medication such as pregnant or breastfeeding women, children and patients who take several medicines in a day.

We can also answer calls about medicines which are often difficult to manage, such as warfarin.

Being able to provide answers to patients’ questions out of hours, when other pharmacy services are not available, is a very rewarding experience.

The pharmacist’s role is complementary to all the other healthcare professionals who work at NHS Direct, and I enjoy working closely with all the members of the team.
