Commissioned by East of England SHA

Since April 2009, NHS Direct’s core service has been directly commissioned and funded by the East of England Strategic Health Authority (SHA) on behalf of the other 9 SHAs in England. Before this, the service was commissioned by the Department of Health.

In February, we agreed with the East of England SHA what service they will buy from us for the coming financial year. For the period from 1 April 2010 to 31 March 2011 NHS Direct has pledged to carry out over 5 million contacts with patients e.g. phone calls and online assessments. In return NHS Direct will receive £123,342,000. We will also be measured against how well we deliver against Key Performance Indicators. These cover ‘Access and choice for patients’, ‘Value to the NHS’, ‘Patient satisfaction’ and ‘Clinical safety and effectiveness’.

NHS Direct will also be eligible to receive additional funding for innovative new projects, but the organisation will have to submit business cases for these to be considered by the East of England SHA.
