NHS Direct launched a mobile app at the end of May for Android and iPhone smartphones.
The app has now been downloaded nearly 300,000 times across the two devices, and has been used over 680,000 times by patients and the public to get trusted and reliable health advice whenever and wherever they are.
The app reached number one in the free download charts on the Apple iTunes store and received various ‘app of the week’ and ‘app of the day’ endorsements in the media.
NHS Direct has always been clear that its digital development is not about increasing the web traffic to its corporate site, but about providing web services in places that patients and the public will find most useful and convenient. This is why its health and symptom checkers are syndicated to other websites - NHS and other - and why the mobile app was a natural progression to make its services more convenient and easier for patients to access. There has been some great feedback on the app from patients, the public and other stakeholders, and this is being used to develop it further.
