NHS Foundation Trust application update

In February 2011, NHS Direct confirmed its intention to be an NHS Foundation Trust from April 2013, following the Government’s commitment that all existing Trusts must either be merged into other organisations or become Foundation Trusts.

We have started the work required to progress our Foundation Trust application and have signed a tripartite formal agreement with the Department of Health. This agreement commits both parties to a series of actions to enable NHS Direct to achieve NHS Foundation Trust status from April 2013. The East of England Strategic Health Authority, our commissioner for the 0845 4647 service, has also signed this agreement giving their support to our application.

Our role in providing the NHS 111 service remains central to our Foundation Trust application. Our involvement in the first four NHS 111 pilots as well as our experience in delivering remote healthcare to date puts us in a strong position to compete to provide this service in future.
