Strategic Development Programme

The NHS is changing and the provision of healthcare is constantly evolving.

At NHS Direct we recognise that our services need to evolve too and we need to get closer to the rest of the NHS and help them deliver their priorities.

So we have embarked on a 12-18 month strategic development programme to learn what we do well and what we can improve. Learning from our patients, our staff, our commissioners and the NHS.

Who we liaised with

We’ve talked to over 30 external public and private sector companies, to 140 people in the public sector and to more than 900 staff.

How will it help?

All of this information is helping us to understand how we can provide an even better service.

Our key areas of focus are as follows:

  • By considering the views of users, commissioners and staff, we are able to get a better picture of needs, behaviour and the value they get from the service. This helps us improve and deliver the services they need.
  • We are exploring how we can increase the use of our multi-channel services to enable us to improve our core service and therefore meet the different needs of our users and commissioners.
  • We want to be more efficient and clever about identifying good ideas, bringing them into the organisation, testing, evaluating and putting them into practice. Staff and users are full of great ideas.
  • Like all NHS organisations we are looking closely at how we can become more cost effective and offer commissioners real value for money,
  • We are developing a set of organisational values which will keep us in tune with the NHS as our staff feel this is really important. To support them we are becoming a great place to work so that we can attract the best people, keep them, motivate them and get the best results for all.
