Update on procurements

NHS Direct has now been selected as the preferred provider of NHS 111 in over 30% of England's population covering around six million calls each year:

Area  % Population
Sutton & Merton  0.7%
Somerset  1.0%
Cornwall & Isles of Scilly  1.0%
North Essex  1.8%
South East London  3.0%
West Midlands 10.3%
North West 13.5%

In all but one area, we will be responsible for delivery of the full NHS 111 service. In South East London, we are working in partnership with GP OOHs providers Grabadoc and Bromley Healthcare to deliver the service. In a number of areas, procurements have still to conclude.

Once the NHS 111 service is available to all of England’s population, the national 0845 4647 telephone service will be decommissioned. In accordance with local procurements and Cabinet Office guidelines, eligible front-line staff will transfer to new NHS 111 providers or remain with NHS Direct to deliver the services it has won.

Ruth Rankine, Director of Strategy and Planning for NHS Direct, said:

“We are delighted that NHS Direct’s skills and experience have been recognised through the procurements and we are looking forward to working with Clinical Commissioning Groups and providers in these areas to ensure we deliver a service that is fully embedded into the local urgent and emergency care system, adds value through managing demand on face-to-face services and, above all, provides an excellent patient experience. The NHS Direct of the future will be different – our services will be commissioned locally, not nationally; we will focus on the needs of our customers and be a provider of high quality local services.

"We also welcome the mechanism, through the Cabinet Office Guidelines and contractual terms and conditions, to transfer front-line staff into new NHS 111 providers so that their skills and expertise can be retained within the NHS.”
