Where are jobs at NHS Direct advertised?

All our jobs are advertised on NHS jobs. Sometimes we also advertise jobs in national or local press.

What are ‘frontline’ jobs?

Our telephone health line is available 24 hours a day through these frontline roles:

We also have many other roles supporting the service we provide.

How do I apply for a job with NHS Direct?

How can I get more information about a job?

All job vacancies advertised on NHS jobs provide:

  • a summary of the role,
  • an application pack, which includes a job description and person specification, and
  • a covering letter and guidance notes for applicants.

Job advertisements usually include the name of an 'informal contact'. You can get in touch with this person to chat informally about the job you're interested in and get more information.

For example, they:

  • can tell you about shift patterns, and
  • may be able to arrange an informal visit for you.

Where is my nearest NHS Direct site?

We have sites at many places across England - see location of NHS Direct sites.

For jobs at NHS24 in Scotland, see the NHS 24 website. To find out about working for NHS Direct Wales, see the NHS Direct Wales website.

Can I visit an NHS Direct site?

NHS Direct sites sometimes hold open days when frontline posts are advertised. The job advertisement will include details of the time, date and venue.

If the job advertisement doesn't mention an open day, you can call or email the informal contact:

  •  to arrange an informal visit, or
  •  to ask further questions.

What is the job reference number?

When you complete an application form, you’ll be asked to enter a job reference number.

This number helps our recruitment team to allocate your application to the correct NHS Direct vacancy. It also helps the team to monitor recruitment statistics.
