Holidaymakers are being advised to renew their European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) before the end of this month as millions are due to expire.
A poll by the Department of Health (DH) claims that out of those who own a card, 68% do not know when it runs out.
To apply for or renew your EHIC visit the NHS Choices website or call 0845 606 2030.
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) enables you to get reduced or sometimes free state-provided healthcare in all European Economic Area countries and Switzerland.
Having an EHIC will allow you to get the same healthcare as the residents of the country you are visiting.
Everyone in the UK must carry one with them when visiting Europe. It is free and valid for up to 5 years. Always check the expiry date before you travel.
You can apply for yourself or for your partner and any children in full time education under the age of 18. If you are under the age of 16, your parent or guardian will need to apply for you.
It will be sent to you within 7 days if you apply online and within 10 if you apply over the phone.
You can also apply by picking up an application pack from your local Post Office but this will take longer.
For further information call the EHIC enquiries line on 0845 605 0707.
