Visitors from home and abroad see the NHS Direct service at first hand
In February 2011, NHS Direct welcomed the French insurance company, Malakoff Mederic, to its contact centre in Hedge End, Hampshire. A delegation of 10 people from the French company visited NHS Direct to see at first hand how the telephone service operates. They were particularly interested in the work we have done to develop a patient segmentation of our users and to quantify the value we add to the wider NHS. Recent changes in the French healthcare system have prompted Malakoff Mederic to look at telephone based health services.
Staff at NHS Direct’s Nottingham contact centre welcomed colleagues from the London Ambulance Service NHS Trust who were keen to see the NHS 111 service being delivered for the Nottingham City, Lincolnshire and Luton pilots. NHS Direct is providing:
- Patient triage, nurse assessment and advice
- Booking GP out of hours (OOHs) appointments where appropriate
- Enabling the dispatch of ambulances where appropriate
In addition, in Luton, NHS Direct is responsible for the overall project management of the service, liaison with local stakeholders and the development of the local Directory of Services (DOS).
Finally, health journalists attended a media event at our Dudley contact centre in February 2011 to see the assistive technology scheme hosted by Birmingham OwnHealth® on behalf of NHS Birmingham East and North. They also met with patients who are benefiting from the project.
The scheme uses Honeywell Ltd’s HomMed telehealth technology, which allows patients to record clinical information specific to their condition in their own home. This information is monitored by NHS Direct care managers who provide immediate support or involve community teams if required. The project aims to help improve the quality of care and independence for patients and deliver cost savings, for example through reduced A&E attendances and hospital admissions.
