At its meeting in December the NHS Direct Board considered the strategic direction for the organisation for the next four years, and the objectives it wants to achieve over that period.
It is a time of both challenge and opportunity for NHS Direct, with a number of factors influencing NHS Direct’s plans for the future. Amongst these are the recently announced statement of the Government’s vision for the health service ‘NHS 2010-15: from good to great’ and the related publication of the NHS operating framework. This builds further on the approach, outlined in the last edition of News Direct, of shaping our services to help meet the challenges of the Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) agenda. We have also seen the publication of the Conservative Party Draft Manifesto on health: ‘Our Reform Plan for the NHS’.
We know that, however political events unfold in 2010, over the next four years the NHS will be under significant pressure to maintain and improve its services for users in the context of significant constraints on the available public finance. This view is reflected in our draft strategic framework, which emphasises that in this period our aim will be to drive greater value from our services for the benefits of our users, the public and the NHS and to continue to develop and implement innovative approaches to the delivery of health care through telephone and web.
